An automation technician for a gas plant is responsible for the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of control systems, instrumentation, and automated equipment. They ensure the plant's processes run efficiently, safely, and in compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Installation & Maintenance: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair various automated systems, including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), SCADA systems, field instrumentation (transmitters, sensors, valves, analyzers), and control loops.
Calibration & Tuning: Perform routine calibration, tuning, and testing of instruments and control devices to ensure accuracy and optimal performance.
Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, and software-related issues in automated systems to minimize downtime.
Preventative Maintenance: Execute scheduled preventative maintenance tasks on control equipment and instrumentation.
Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed records of maintenance, calibration activities, system modifications, and repair histories.
Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all plant safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards. Participate in safety meetings and hazard assessments.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Required: Associate's degree or technical diploma in Instrumentation, Automation Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
Experience: Typically 3-5 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, instrumentation, or electrical maintenance, preferably within a gas processing, refinery, or petrochemical environment.
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of control loop theory, process measurement, and final control elements.
Proficiency in troubleshooting of PLCs and DCS platforms.
Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), electrical schematics, and loop sheets.
Solid understanding of electrical safety and codes (e.g., NEC).
